About Us
Our Mission
To support families and to foster children’s healthy development and learning by partnering with parents to:
- develop leadership and support networks;
- provide services that respond to the changing needs of families and communities; and
- facilitate collaboration of and access to community resources.
Our goal is to meet the needs of the families in the northern part of Durham County; as those families change our services grow to meet their needs. We celebrate the diversity of our community and employ innovative strategies to bring families together in their shared goals for their children.
The Family Center is operated by a non-profit organization called Journey Institute, which is guided by a Board of Directors. The Board includes parent leaders, family support and early childhood specialists, as well and community members; parents who use the Family Center make up about 50% of the Board.
Our Staff
The staff of the Family Center includes family support, family literacy and early childhood specialists with a collective 45 years of experience. With both English and Spanish-speaking staff, we are equipped to meet the needs of parents and children in northern Durham County.
Our Volunteers
We are fortunate to have support from many volunteers at the Family Center. They contribute their time to help us with fundraising, program promotion, cleaning, gardening, and shopping to name a few. We wouldn’t be here without them, and we invite you to join their numbers!
Our Partner Agencies
We operate approximately half of our programs in collaboration with other community-based organizations: Durham Literacy Center and Cristo Viva, the Hispanic Ministries of St. Paul’s Methodist Church.
Our Funders
The Family Center gratefully receives funding from:
- North Carolina Dept. of Public Instruction’s Children’s Trust Fund;
- Prevent Child Abuse North Carolina;
- Frank
U. and Nelle Crowell Fletcher Fund of Triangle Community Foundation; and
- Donations from individuals within the community.
